Short Term Pain = Long Term Gain
SHORT TERM PAIN = LONG TERM GAIN (and vice versa)
This is a life improvement nugget that’s very close to my heart. I think I’ve suffered from ‘short term gain’ far too many times. My life would be easier had I chosen ‘short term pain’. Allow me to explain.

Attitudes for Successful Learners!
“I CAN.”
This is the most basic of all attitudes. We simply must choose to believe that we can learn. In your house do not allow the words, “I can’t.” Instead say, “I haven’t yet, and I can,” or “I can’t YET, but I will!!!” Telling yourself that you can’t will in effect make it so. But telling yourself that you can, will in effect enable you to learn much more. Even if you actually only achieve 50% of what you tell yourself, you will achieve at least that much more than if you told yourself you couldn’t. So many people were told at a young age that they couldn’t learn. Many others were allowed to engage in that kind of negative self talk (tell themselves that) and their parents and teachers didn’t intervene. This enabled them to develop “I can’t” attitudes that become self-fulfilling prophecies.

Savor precious moments usually taken for granted
I was at a favorite Ohio amusement park, Cedar Point, with my husband, son and a friend of his. We were riding rides… your typical Cedar Point routine. As the ride plummeted downward, I heard my son laugh hysterically. I grabbed a hold of that sound and buried it in my heart. I told him about it when we got off the ride and lavished him with praise about how great it made me feel, he continued to do it the rest of the day. One of the greatest sounds in the world is laughter, especially when it belongs to someone you love. Be able to describe the laugh of one you love and you will have those savored moments with you forever. Otherwise, you’ll forget them. Remembering that, that laugh will take you through some tough spots in life. You’ll be able to go back to the times you’ve savored and rest in them when you need a break from life’s difficulty. What precious memory are you savoring?

Believe in yourself
Stop buying into the lie that you can’t succeed. Pay absolutely no attention to those that say it’s ‘ok’ if you can’t do it and even less attention to those who insinuate that you’re not good enough. It was said of Michael Jordan, when he first made the NBA, that his greatest weakness was shooting. Did you get that? SHOOTING… MICHAEL JORDAN’S GREATEST WEAKNESS WAS SHOOTING! Needless to say, he dominated that world! He believed he could do it and worked to get his ability to where his belief was. Life will be infinitely easier on us when we’re a little bit tougher on ourselves.

Face your fear… cause it’s just a fantasy anyway
It doesn’t matter what the fear is, one hundred percent of the time, all you fear will simply NOT take place. You see, we look at a new, perhaps untried situation. It intimidates us because of the uncertainty of not doing it before. Then our imaginations engage. We begin to allow our mind to paint pictures of the horrible outcome, the terrible disaster that will be if we do the unknown and try the new task. We sweat, our heart rate goes up, our breathing is even affected! And do you know why? Because of fantasy! I’ll prove it. Think about a scary movie you’ve seen. When you got to the parking lot, you checked in the back seat and under the car. When you got home you checked behind the doors and under the bed. Why? Fantasy! See, even though YOU know that what you saw was a movie, your mind doesn’t know the difference between what’s real and what’s imagined. Thus, the nervousness and anxiety felt is a result of imagination. So, the next time you get around the same, untried new thing, what happens? The fear, you got it. Because your mind is convincing you that the imagined outcome is real. Now, knowing that, that’s the way it works, we CAN make it work FOR us. Think, instead, on what you want. Imagine, with as much detail as possible, the outcome you’d like to see take place when you do the thing you’re unsure of. When we envision the things we want our mind, again, will see it as real and direct you accordingly. This time, instead of nerves and sweat, confidence and self-esteem will be the result. When we tell our mind, through the pictures we paint in it, that we can have what we want, we will do the very thing we fear (cause our mind doesn’t know we fear it), and then the death of fear is CERTAIN! Come on, just once. Forget the fantasy and face the fear. Oh, will life EVER be easier!

Your Fist Factor
Who are the 5 people you spend the greatest amount of time with? Go ahead, list them. These people make up what is known as your “Fist Factor”. They are referred to as that because when you take five fingers and make a fist, it represents power. And these 5 hold the greatest POWER of influence over you. There are no exceptions, those we spend the bulk of our time with are the ones that determine how we think, act and behave. And they will be key in determining whether or not we achieve or goal.
